I was in Chennai aka Madras for the weekend and I took off one morning to do some bird watching and to explore a part of the city – the Broken Bridge and the Adyar Estuary from the Besant Nagar side.

The Broken Bridge is a bridge to nowhere. Built in 1960s over the Adyar Estuary it collapsed in about ten years and was never rebuilt. It connected Santhome and Besant Nagar

Although I have seen it from the Santhome end, (see pictures from  my earlier post here )I had always wanted to walk on the broken bridge and see the sunrise.

The Adyar Estuary is also a birding hotspot, filled with migratory birds.

Dreamy and beautiful, I spent the morning in Chennai walking on the bridge and spotting a few plovers, stints, stilts and loads of photographers.

There was one wedding photographer who in fact disturbed a huge flock of plovers on the beach. There was also a lady wearing  a long silky gown , I think red in colour, sitting on a horse being filmed – I was not sure if it was for a TVC or a TV serial. I was there for barely an hour, but surprisingly the beach was clean . I am heading back soon again to do more bird watching.

A morning well spent I would say. As for the ‘wedding photographer,’ try doing an early morning bird walk with a bunch of cackling women. It ain’t pretty !!
